on photography

I feel really weird about the idea that the type of camera or lens or tool that you use shouldn’t matter in photography because to some extent I really think it should

not to say that if you don’t have this and that you can’t be successful, it’s not like that at all, it’s not always about prices and megapixels and all of that

It’s just, like in any branch of art, the tool is a pretty big determining factor in making the artwork what it is, you can’t produce the same painting with oil as you can watercolor.

there is a function for everything made

there is a reasoning behind different brushes, papers, clays, paints and metals

a holga will produce a different image than a pinhole, or a 5d, or a disposable, or a 35mm that you found in the back of a thrift store for five dollars

not in terms of quality but just physical aspects, it’s capabilities, potential

a holga provides a single focus point, beautiful blurred edges and intense vignetting, it’s a plastic camera made for lo-fi photos, and as easy as it is to take photos that look like crap, it’s also easy to use that low quality aspect to your advantage and to create something intriguing

a pinhole gives you endless focus with soft blurring and a quality that draws you into the center of the composition. The fleeting, soft quality is what some people love about it. Others will die for the wide angle views and being able to manipulate your subject with the passage of time.

a 5d will give you the crispest colors and when paired with a low aperture lens will lend you the sharpest edges and glowing bokeh. It will give you huge, high quality files and the immediate knowledge of whether or not your idea is coming through.

a disposable will provide a candid feeling, with a flash that blows out the subject and the ability to be carried into the most dangerous of situations with no fear, it will give you freedom to have fun with your photos because they aren’t always promised to come out quite right

and an old 35 will ask you to take time when you shoot, to consider the composition and lighting situations, will force you to meter yourself and have complete control over whatever it is you are working with

nothing is useless, nothing is more important than anything else when it comes to photographic tools, every piece of equipment has its place and its area of expertise

it’s knowing what you want to make and how you can achieve that and working your tool to your advantage, that’s what’s important

that’s why the camera is important

because you can’t take the same photo with one camera that you can another and that’s a good thing, that’s a great thing, because that opens so many doors to what you can create with different mediums

we are lucky to have so many options of how to manipulate optics to create something beautiful

don’t limit yourself to just one tool

take advantage and get to playing

i wonder…

I wonder what it feels like to be beautiful, what it’s like to turn heads when you’re walking down the street. I wonder what’s it’s like to people think you’re pretty, and have people whisper to each other as you walk by “wow, she’s pretty”. I wonder what it feels like to be thin,to be happy in your own skin. I wonder what it feels like to be wanted,to be loved. I wonder what it feels like to have people like you.

I wonder…because i know i’ll never know.

people need to realize that being skinny doesn’t make you happy, doesn’t make you more popular, doesn’t necessarily make you pretty, doesn’t make you more attractive to guys, doesn’t make clothes look better. if being thin really = happiness, then i’d have been happy my whole life. in the end you will still be you, with your same problems and concerns, just in a smaller package. the most beautiful people are those who are happy in themselves.
